What is Microneedling?
If over-the-counter skin care products are no longer proving to be effective, but you aren't ready for surgery, you may want to consider nonsurgical skin rejuvenation treatments like microneedling. Dr. Jenn Psota Dougherty and her skilled team are pleased to offer microneedling (or collagen induction therapy) treatments at their office in Westlake, OH. Microneedling uses many tiny, fine-gauge needles to effectively and safely make micro-injuries in the needed areas of the skin. The micro-injuries trigger the body's natural production of elastin and collagen, two nutrients that contribute to the health and appearance of your skin. Often combined with other treatments, like vitamin serums, microneedling can help reduce scars, pores, and stretch marks. Schedule a consultation at The Facial Aesthetics Center at Westlake Family Dental Care to discover more about the benefits of microneedling and the various ways to personalize your procedure for your skin concerns and goals.

who is an ideal Candidate for microneedling?
You could be a candidate for microneedling treatments if you experience light to moderate complexion issues, like a decrease in firmness or an uneven texture. Microneedling treatments may also improve the look of scars, pores, and stretch marks. You must be willing to wait a while before seeing benefits from your microneedling procedure since the collagen and elastin will need a month or longer to take effect on the skin; however, you will have natural-looking results and gain healthier, firmer skin.
How Does Microneedling Work?
Collagen induction therapy with microneedling is completed in one of our office procedure rooms in about 30 – 60 minutes. We can also administer local anesthesia or numbing cream if preferred, but patients typically experience little or no discomfort. The skin will be cleansed before the microneedling handpiece is evenly passed over it. Once the microneedling process is complete, a topical treatment like platelet-rich plasma or a vitamin-infused serum may be applied for deeper penetration of the nutrients into the skin. A moisturizer selected for your skin type will be massaged onto the skin, along with UV protection, since your skin will be sensitive following the procedure.
What to Expect After Microneedling
After your treatment, you may experience mild swelling and redness for about a day; however, this should fade quickly on its own. It may take around 1 – 2 months as the collagen and elastin levels increase until you see visible changes in the health and appearance of your treated skin. You should plan to get around 4 – 6 maintenance sessions every 4 – 6 weeks for optimal results and long-term skin health.

Can I combine other treatments with microneedling?
In the microneedling process, channels are made in your skin that make it easier for treatments to penetrate the deeper layers. This is why microneedling is commonly combined before other skin treatment, such as vitamin-rich serums or PRP (platelet-rich plasma). Microneedling with PRP is more commonly known as a vampire facial. In your initial consultation, Dr. Jenn can explain what treatments may be performed along with microneedling and which would most benefit your skin.
How many treatments are recommended for optimal results?
Most patients need 3 – 6 microneedling sessions to achieve optimal results. Although, the number of sessions you need will vary based on the condition of your skin and your goals. Microneedling can be safely performed every 4 – 6 weeks. In your initial consultation, Dr. Jenn will estimate how many sessions you will need after assessing your skin and listening to your goals. Once you have reached your goal, Dr. Jenn recommends scheduling maintenance treatments about twice a year.
Is microneedling safe for everyone?
On the whole, microneedling is appropriate for all skin tones and types. Since the skin injuries created are so small, there are rarely side effects afterward. Microneedling can be applied to most areas of skin, including the arms, face, neck, chest, and legs. Microneedling is not recommended if you have taken Accutane within the last 2 – 3 months, as well as if you have an active skin infection, open wound, or herpes simplex. In addition, you might not be a candidate for microneedling if you are pregnant, nursing, or getting radiation therapy.
How much does microneedling cost?
In your initial consultation, we will evaluate your skin and then create your unique plan. From there, we will talk about your costs and what to expect during the procedure.
What exactly is microneedling?
Microneedling, also referred to as collagen induction therapy, is a skin rejuvenation treatment that helps smooth and clear your skin for better tone, texture, and feel. Collagen is a naturally occurring fibrous protein that helps keep your skin vibrant, smooth, and supple. Over time and as we age, the natural supply of collagen in the skin is depleted, and the skin can lose it's "glow." Microneedling creates small puncture wounds in your skin that work to increase collagen production and generate new skin cell growth. Once healed, the skin appears refreshed, brighter, and healthier.
When will I see results?
As soon as patients undergo the treatment at our practice in Westlake, OH, they often see an instant "glow" to their complexion. This initial radiance is followed by more visible improvements in skin quality over the next days and weeks. The benefits can keep enhancing your skin for up to six months after treatment, thanks to ongoing collagen production.
